Diss in Our Time

This year the museum celebrates its own 50th birthday. Fittingly, the largest display shows how three friends depicted Diss over five decades and more.

Mike Webb was a screen printer before becoming a full time artist. Readers of the Diss Express loved his Mere Quacks cartoons, in which ducks took a rueful look at the town's activities. The display, Diss in Our Time, shows that these cartoons are still fresh, relevant and funny.

The late Neville Brundell was a councillor, mayor and prominent member of the Chamber of Commerce. He was also an expert cartographer. His town maps and cuttings scrapbooks dating from the 1960s, provide a vivid picture of a changing market town.

Basil Abbott is now in his 20th year as Diss Museum's manager. Over two decades he put the museum on the map in his own way, with pageants, drama productions and most recently, ghost walks. His photographs of these, and of the last days of Diss Grammar School in 1991, will jog many happy memories. Basil edited the Diss Town Guide for 30 years, working with Neville and occasionally with Mike.
