Charles W Hurren started his business in 1901. He sold confectionery, fruit, tobacco, and cigars from his shop at 28 St Nicholas Street.
In 1955, Mrs Forsdyke took over the shop from her mother and moved the business to 27 St Nicholas Street, bringing the Hurren's sign with her. The shop became a Tobacconist & Confectioner.
The original business was started in 1871 by her grandmother Jane.
The sweetshop was a treasure among local children, who held it dear. When it closed in August 1977, its absence left a sugary void.
